Cruising: Know Before You Go

Going on a cruise for the first time can be an overwhelming experience. It’s quite different from staying at a resort and not just because you are on a moving ship! I remember my first cruise – I had a lot of anxiety because I knew literally nothing about cruising or how anything worked on the ship.

Below is a list of things I wish I knew before taking my first cruise!

Cruise Card

Your cruise card is your life line on the ship so make sure you don’t lose it. Cruise ships are virtually cash less – everything you buy on the ship will be through your cruise card, which your credit card will be linked to.

Your cruise card will also include your stateroom number and your dinner time.

Alcohol

Since cruise ships aren’t all inclusive you have two options: 1) buy a drink package or 2) purchase your drinks as you buy them. Whether you will find value in a drink package will really depend on how much you plan on drinking.

They do also sell non-alcoholic drink packages as well if you do not drink alcohol.

Depending on the cruise line, you are allowed to bring wine on the ship with you. Royal Caribbean allows you to bring 2 750ml bottles of wine. If you try to bring anything other than wine it will be confiscated.

Dining

When you first book your cruise you will be given the opportunity to schedule a specific dining time. I recommend doing this so that you are guaranteed a table in the dining room.

The dining room is somewhat similar to a buffet. Want to try 2 appetizers? Order both. Want to order a second entrée? Go ahead. Don’t like your dessert? Try a different one.

Room Service

Room Service is actually included in your cruise package. You can order anything off the menu 24/7 and it will be delivered to your room. If you plan on having breakfast in your room I suggest placing your order in advance as they will be busy.

Cruise Carry-on

Make sure when you pack your carry on you pack everything you will need for your first day/night on the cruise ship.  Your checked bag won’t make it to your room until later in the evening – the crew have thousands of bags to bring up so be patient.

Excursions

I recommend booking any excursions as soon as you get on the ship. If you wait too long the excursion could be sold out.

Gratuities

Cruise ships automatically charge gratuities to your card so there is no need to tip. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to tip the crew as I’m sure it will help get you better service but it isn’t required.
