What to do in the Town of Banff, Alberta

Last Updated on January 2, 2026 by Samantha

Banff National Park is filled with so many great gems to explore but make sure you don’t overlook downtown Banff. Downtown Banff offers mountain views, tons of restaurants and shops, a museum and so much more to keep you occupied.

Keep in mind that parking is very limited and you will likely have to park in a paid lot, which can be quite costly. If you are staying in Banff, leave your car at the hotel or Airbnb and walk over. If you are staying in Canmore, there is a commuter bus you can take to avoid bringing your car and then you are also free to drink.

To make the most of your time, here are the best things to do in downtown Banff!

Banff Gondola

An easy way to see beautiful mountain views without having to hike is by taking the Banff gondola up Sulphur Mountain. Once you reach the top you will enjoy 360° scenic views from 7,486 ft above sea level. After enjoying the views you can climb up higher on a secured staircase, enjoy some lunch of head to the Banff Skywalk. The Banff Skywalk will lead you to the Cosmic Ray Station National Historic Site and Sanson’s Peak Meteorological Station.

Tickets are pricey ranging from $69-$88 CAD but you can get 10% off if you book far enough in advance. Although the tickets are pricey, the views are breathtaking.

Banff Upper Hot Springs

The Banff Hot Springs is a great way to end the day after a full day of hiking or if you are just looking to do some relaxing between days of hiking. The Hot Springs can be enjoyed all year round. These hot springs were discovered in 1883 and are the last remaining hot springs accessible to the public. The water ranges between 37°C and 40°C (98-104°F) and is a great way to work in some relaxing time while in Banff.

Banff Avenue

Banff Avenue is the main street in the town of Banff. This is where you will find all the main restaurants, shopping, hotels and stunning views. This is a great spot to come for lunch or dinner and to do some shopping. Parking in and around Banff Avenue is very difficult and there are only a few limited paid lots. If you are staying in Banff, I recommend walking here. If you are staying in Canmore, you can take the bus from Canmore so you don’t have to worry about parking.

Eat a Beavertail

Beavertails are definitely a must try when visiting Canada! They are a sugary fried pastry that are supposed to resemble a beavertail. The classic is made with cinnamon sugar and is my favourite but there are also tons of other topping options you can choose. No matter which one you try, you will not be disappointed. This sugary snack is a true Canadian staple so make sure you stop by and try one!

Surprise Corner Viewpoint

Surprise Corner is a sharp corner on a mountain road. From here, you will have great views of the Banff Springs Hotel and the Bow Falls. There is a small parking lot (less than 10 cars) for you to park in or you can walk about 15 minutes from town to the viewpoint.

Bow Falls

After exploring downtown Banff, head to Bow Falls to enjoy the beautiful falls and mountain views. There is a short trail that will bring you closer to the top of the waterfall. This will be one of the easiest waterfalls to access as it doesn’t require any hiking and you can enjoy the view after a few short steps from the parking lot.

Cascade of Time Garden

After lunch, walk over the pedestrian bridge from Banff Avenue and head to the Cascade of Time Gardens for a relaxing stroll through the gardens. With beautiful gardens, ponds and mountain views, these gardens are the perfect place for a stroll on a summer afternoon.

Banff Park Museum National Historic Site

At the end of Banff Avenue is the Banff Park Museum in a stunning log cabin. The museum showcases the history of Banff through specimens of flora and fauna.

Take a Photo with the Banff Sign

The iconic Banff welcome sign was recently moved from Norquay Road to the small hill beside the Banff Train Station. This will actually be a much safe spot for you to grab a photo with or of the sign.
